History
The history of the cajon is generally traced
back to Peru where slaves from different
parts of Africa were either without drums,
had them taken away and were otherwise forbidden to express their native cultures
by their oppressors. We all know that you can't stop the drumming and that music is
an important part of cultural identity.
Packing crates became drums and other common items became percussion instruments. Some means of expression
had to be hidden or disguised. Similar
adaptations happened in other areas like
Brazil where Capoeira developed from the
need to mask the practice of their martial
arts by making it look like lyrical energetic dancing. Cultures and musical styles mix and evolve. In Peru the locals mixed with the African and Spanish influences. People use whatever they have at hand and necessity inspires innovation. Pictured here is a birch
cajon with one oak slapping face. Dimensions are approx. 18"h x 14"w x 13"d or 46 x
36 x 33 cm.

About Cajons
The modern cajon has rapidly and firmly found a place in many percussionist's bag of tricks. Pro players amaze us with their
virtuosity and the sounds they get. The
ease of play and portability give many recreational drummers another choice beyond the djembe. Players of traditional
rhythms and explorers of new ones have
found the cajon to be a great companion.
Serious musicians and campfire players alike have elevated banging on a box to a
true art form. It's only natural that the cajon
should evolve too. This all birch cajon
measures 18.5"h x 14.5"w x 13.75"d. The
width measurement is the slapping face dimension.
